Fire Safety

What an exciting morning!! The NorthShore firefighters popped in for a visit. The children learned many important fire safety tips:

  • DON'T play with matches or lighters!
  • Check smoke detectors once a month and change the batteries when the clocks move forward or back.
  • If your clothes start on fire... STOP, DROP, & ROLL!
  • Have a family meeting and choose a "meeting place" in the case of evacuation from a burning house. Practice your drill.
  • Call 9-1-1 in cases of emergency!
  • Don't hide if you are stuck in a fire. Yell for the firefighter!!

We also learned that smoke is very heavy and it starts at the top of the room and slowly pushes its way down to the floor. To get out of a smoky room, you need to crawl so you stay under the smoke.
It was so fun to see the big firefighter dressed in all his firefighting gear. It weighs more than the kids... over 50 pounds with a full oxygen tank. Yikes!!
(The teachers think we should try this technique with our snow gear...snowpants are already attached over the boots. Jump in and pull up the pants!  Poof! Done!!)
The oxygen tank is sooooo heavy and makes funny noises!
The mask makes the firefighter sound really strange.

We learned the air feeds a fire, so if your clothes are on fire... DON'T run... Stop, Drop, and Roll!
Don't forget to cover your face!

Thank you firefighters!!

Our afternoon was filled with fire safety enrichment activities and extensions.

What a GREAT day!
