Drawing like a Scientist

We took advantage of the pretty day yesterday and took a walk in the afternoon with the challenge of finding ONE beautiful autumn leaf for a special project.
That was a tall order because all the leaves are so pretty. It was hard to choose.
Of course, we took the time to make some other cool observations while we were outside. The children found a worm covered with ants! We watched for several minutes and we were off again!!
Success!!
Everyone found a special leaf!

The prekindergarten children are learning the difference between drawing and creating like an ARTIST and recording and sketching like a scientist. It's different. Ask your child HOW it is different.
Drawing like a scientist takes an intense amount of concentration.  The children must look very carefully at every curve, every line, every color. Look at these little faces. So focused.

After the children drew the outline of their leaf, as well as the stem and veins, it was time to paint with watercolors and see if just the right color could be produced. Some of them were very tricky.

Watch for the finished products to show up in our hallway. They are stunning!!
