Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

We have been involved in an inquiry about Caring for the Earth. This generation of children needs to grow up learning HOW to do this well because they will be the solution to the saving our planet.
We set up a class recycling center and explored many nonfiction books about different things that can be done to help  cut down on trash.

To get a new center up and running the first thing we do is create signage to let others know what the center is all about. At this point in the year the children take care of this on their own and beam with pride as they view the results.

We can't forget about Saving the Oceans!!

Citizens from our community visit our recycling plant with their bags of recyclables. Sometimes they are given cash for their cans. This was a new concept for the kids because all year long the clerk behind the register would accept money, not give it away.

Next, our workers engage in the sorting process.

We learned about recycling, but also about reusing and reducing. The kids are very aware, so NOW is the time to put this awareness into action so it will become routine and habit for them as they grow into adults. I hope you have noticed your child reminding YOU to turn off the lights, recycle an item, or even turn off the water when brushing your teeth:)

The most fun we've been having is using the recyclables to create new items... some are inventions so we call this upcycling and others are art... we call these sculptures.

We have also been experimenting with using different recyclables to create art. Several new discoveries have been made; soda can rolling

and tube printing.
Watch for a separate post on this!!
