Penguins and Polar Bears Loose in 4K!

Our scientists conducting their research on penguins and polar bears. Some very detailed scientific observations were rendered!

An engineering challenge of the week: build a polar bear den from marshmallows and toothpicks.

We talked about how the Mama penguin carefully passes the egg to the Daddy after it is laid.  The Mama goes out to find food and the Daddy balances the egg on his feet, keeping it off the ice and warm with his layer of fat.

We practiced being penguins- balancing and passing our shaker eggs that we use for music.

Careful, careful...

These kiddos have very impressive penguin skills!

We also talked about how penguins and polar bears have thick layers of blubber that help them to stay warm in very cold conditions...

and we did an experiment (of course!)...

First, we tested our ice water to ensure that it was COLD.
Then, I happened to have a bag of cooking lard...

We wondered how the ice water would feel when we had a layer of fat around our own hand?

Not so cold! But we'll stick to coats and mittens to keep us warm...

We had a polar bear den in our classroom this past week with the cutest little bears.

We looked at some pictures of the aurora borealis phenomenon in Alaska, where polar bears live, and created pictures with colored chalk in art.

Such beautiful colored skies!

We talked about how teddy bears and polar bears are alike and different and used a Venn diagram to categorize our ideas. This also doubled as a fiction/non-fiction lesson.

Big Buddy time. Our buddies helped us with our Creation books in progress.
