Master Artist Study

As the culmination to our month-long color inquiry, the full-day students learned about two artists who LOVED using lots of color in their works; Jackson Pollock and Piet Mondrian.
The children enjoyed creating their own artist-inspired masterpieces using similar techniques.
It was very exciting to use a real canvas as opposed to
paper for our Pollock-inspired painting.
 Pollock used a lot of color in his action paintings;
he dripped, poured, and splattered watered down paint
and worked with his canvas on the ground
so he could walk around it as he added colors.
The paint actually takes form in mid-air
before landing on the canvas.
To help the paint to fall freely from the brushes and cups,
we watered it down a bit.
Painting in our bare feet was especially fun!
Looking pretty colorful so far!!
The second group of children added 3 different colors right on top of the original colors. It finished it off just perfectly!!

Ta-Daaaaaa!
Perhaps we will donate this to the auction this year!!

Big Buddy Time

Friday was the BIG day!!
The littles met their very own BIG Buddy!!
First, we spent a little time in the
classrooms getting to know one another.
Your child should have brought home an
information sheet from their big buddy(ies).
Next, we headed outside and enjoyed running, playing hopscotch, making chalk drawings, playing games, climbing on the tot lot,
and just having some good buddy fun.
Each Friday we will get together and
do an activity with our buddies.
We will also attend mass with our Big Buddies on
October 12th due to the fact that we do NOT
have school on the first Friday of October!

We Are Artists: Inspired by Piet Mondrian

During our enrichment afternoons this week in the Discovery Lab, we are looking deeper into Piet Mondrian, a Dutch painter who used primary color, shape, and horizontal and vertical line in his abstract works.

We decided we could paint a painting like Mondrian!

The little artists were so focused on their creations...

and each work was as beautiful and unique

as the kiddo who created it.

We are artists!

Making Applesauce

First, collect a variety of fresh, juicy apples.

Second, gather a roomful of kiddos who will excitedly wash,

dry,

and chop

every last apple.

We used butter knives to cut the apples into pieces and talked about how to cut safely. The children did a great job being careful and conscientious...an awesome confidence builder as they accomplished a "grown-up" job!

After the apples were chopped, it was time to add the spice-

Each kiddo added just a touch- not too much!

Finally, the most important ingredient of all- a sprinkle of love into the pot!

After about 2 hours...yum...

Not done yet- time to mash,

smash,

mush

and smush

the apples into sauce.

Tasting time! The  applesauce was completely created by the kids and they were very proud of themselves!
