Advent Days of Discovery

In the Discovery Lab, we're counting down the days until Christmas with tons of fun and messy science experiments and art projects, and thought provoking math and engineering challenges!  We're calling it our "Advent Days of Discovery."

Last week we made snow from 2 common household ingredients: baking soda and white conditioner.  We've used baking soda in our "Applecano" experiment when we added vinegar to baking soda, so it was interesting to hear our scientists' hypothesize about what might happen...

We took turns measuring, pouring, and mixing...

No big eruption- but we had soft, fluffy snow!

After a few days of playing with our snow, we brought out the vinegar and sprayed some of our snowballs.  Would they fizz???

Fizz-tastic!  I think the conditioner tamped down the reaction a bit, but the scientists had great fun experimenting!

We also have a cookie decorating station with peppermint scented dough...mmmmm...

Our sensory table has been transformed into a gift wrapping station, with many gifts being fancifully wrapped!

Thank you, families, for your generous donations of wrap, ribbon, and bows!

Strengthening our hands and practicing our number recognition and one-to-one counting skills in math.

Our Big Buddies helped us read and color books that will be going home soon...

and we has enough time to sing a few festive Christmas carols together!  What a wonderful week!
