bake this bread?
For the past couple of weeks we have been engaged in an ELA unit on The Little Red Hen. The children have heard many different versions of this folktale and they clearly have identified their favorites. We have learned to compare and contrast things in the story such as the characters, setting, the type of seed the hen finds, as well as what she bakes. Of course, the part of the story that remained the same was our favorite. Not I, said the... perhaps you have heard your child reciting and retelling this story at home.
Today, we made our own cornbread in preparation for our class party. First, we looked at a real corn kernel and talked about how the little red hen took her kernels to the miller to be ground into flour.
This is what the corn looks like when it is ground.
Next, we took turns dumping the corn flour into the bowl.
We added a bit of milk.
And a couple of eggs.
We have some amazing egg crackers in this class!
Finally, it was time to stir,
and stir,
and stir!
Mmmm... golden brown.
Looks yummy!
Who will help me eat this bread?!?
(Stay-tuned until tomorrow.)
Here are some of our Little Red Hen stories.
Be sure to have your child read his/her story to you!!
