Campaign Headquarters is Open

The little citizens in prekindergarten are learning a bit about the democratic process in our country. We have set up a mini polling booth within our campaign headquarters and our room is looking very patriotic in its red, white, and blue decor.

The children created campaign posters, flags, as well as registration cards. We had fun decorating our dramatic play corner in
patriotic-style.

We have learned some amazing vocabulary words like ballot, vote, candidate, campaign, politics, and citizen, to name a few.
Many great skills are being practiced as the children wait in line to show their voter registration card and receive their ballot and then have to get in another line and wait to enter the semi-private voting booth. Lots of name writing practice going on as the children sign their names to the ballot... otherwise it's NOT valid! Writing in general is occurring in abundance as the children create campaign posters. We learned a great sight word this week... 'ME!' Opening the ballots at the end-of-the-day and tallying each vote has been wonderful counting practice, as well as figuring out which number is the biggest. We have also been using our tally data and turning it into a graph. As the week goes on, I will try to have the children do this along with me.

There are always opportunities to read books on the subject!
Friday we created All-American 3-D paper sculptures. Everyone was so busy and fascinated by what they were doing the room was quiet!

Each day our ballot has something new to vote on (favorite food, pet, color, weather, insect, AND... president)! Stop in if you'd like to cast your vote. Our presidential ballot has a surprise candidate!!
