GAK! and Last Week's Fun in the Discovery Lab

Last week our science experiment in the Discovery Lab was mixing up a batch of  Christmas Gak- a super cool substance that's not quite liquid and not quite solid and made from a few household ingredients.

We mixed white glue, water, food coloring, and glitter (LOTS of glitter) until it was smooth...

Then we slowly added a water and Borax solution and stirred...it thickened and oozed!

What other discoveries did our scientists make about their Gak?  It was slimey and squishy!!

It could be pulled and broken into pieces and squished back together!

It would stretch- then stretch even more!

It bounced!

We've had a cookie decorating center this past week, where cookie bakers have been hard at work.

Reindeer, gingerbread, and stockings

During our evergreen unit at the beginning of December, we experimented  painting with natural evergreen paintbrushes.  This week we took our paintings, cut them into Christmas trees, and decorated them with dazzling sequins and glittery garlands.  They are absolutely beautiful!

The engineering challenge: Build baby Jesus a stable and manger from Legos.

If only Mary and Joseph had had a dump truck to give them a ride to Bethlehem!

A Lego car would have been useful as well!

What a fantastic week of discovery and play!
