Christmas Light Science

Here is our latest STEM challenge.
Today the children found snipped Christmas light strings, along with a 9V battery, on our Discovery Table. No instructions were given besides informing them that there was something interesting for them to explore.
A few curious kiddos headed straight to the table and carefully examined all the pieces. They tinkered around for awhile, with no results and asked me what they could DO with these pieces.

My response was simply... 'well, they are lights, I wonder if we can get them to turn on?'
That intrigued the children and they headed off once again.
A bit more time passed and suddenly two LOUD squeals were heard. They got the lights to shine!!  Woohoooo!!
All the other little people came running and it was beyond joyful to witness the bright eyes of wonder and excitement as to HOW this was happening. Everyone had to get in on the action.

As the children took turns trying to turn the lights on, a few other discoveries were made. They figured out just what would turn the lights on and what combinations wouldn't.

We will definitely be revisiting this tomorrow!! These sweet little friends told me "the half-dayers HAVE to see this!!"

Just to put your mind at ease, the children were instructed that this was NOT something they could do at home unless a parent prepared the experiment for them.
