Our insect unit launched this week and our first order of business was to learn what an insect IS and what it is NOT.
We learned that insects have certain characteristics
in common no matter how large or how small they are.
They all have 6 legs, 3 body parts, 2 antennae
and usually 2 pairs of wings.
The body parts are called a head, thorax, and abdomen.
We are becoming labeling machines!

FYI... not all bugs are insects!
Bugs are a type of insect and have a stylet mouth.
It's similar to a straw.
We created our own unique insects...
Made creepy crawly writing trays & sensory bins...
Engaged in insect math...
Ladybugs come in handy for addition equations.
Using loose parts as nonstandard units of measurement
to measure how high the grasshopper jumped.
We even made creepy crawly fossils.
This insect looks good enough to eat!
Responding to read alouds helps the children to make
deeper connections with the characters in the stories.
Going on bug hunts is especially fun!!
Can you tell, we are already transforming into entomologists!
That's a big word for insect scientist:)
