This past week our afternoons have been filled with
sounds of pounding hammers, sawing saws, and buzzing drills.
We built a construction site in our room and the architects, engineers, and builders got right to work.
Lots of collaboration and team work occurred.
Problem solving skills were at a premium.
With all the building going on, the inspector was busy all week.
Many math opportunities...
measuring, writing numbers, counting nails...
The architects were busy designing bridges, skyscrapers,
houses, schools, towers, etc...
The project manager's office was busy all week.
The managers needed to use their speaking skills to order
supplies for the work site, as well as give directions
to the construction workers.
We got in some authentic writing practice too:)
Unfortunately, several workers got fired, but the
project manager learned that giving employees
positive feedback is also a skill they need to focus on.
Some of the building happened on a smaller scale.
The children worked together to assemble mini marble runs.
What would a unit be without inserting a bit of literacy fun?
We put together a mini construction site ABC bin.
So fun!
Our construction tinker tray, complete with dirt playdough, provided lots of open-ended play with loose parts allowing creativity and imaginations to come alive.
Stay-tuned for the next transformation of our dramatic play corner.
